Register with PSB During Olympics? When I renewed my "visiting relatives" visa in Shanghai last time, I had forgotten to go to the police station last time I arrived in China in order to register and get that bit of A5 sized yellow(?) paper that is the temporary residence document. The visa people in Shanghai would not renew the visa until I had been back to my local police station and got the bit of paper required. I had to spend 1/2 a day at my local police station and pay a fine of a few hundred RMB in order to get this indispensable paper. Only then could I renew my visa. Members of the public and even the police were pretty sympathetic to me that I had such a lot of trouble over this small irregularity. Moral: when entering the country go to the police station within about 24h and get this important bit of paper. Then, make sure you don't lose it, in case you need it. |

Shanghai Metro is Not 24 Hours I guess part of the problem is maintaining the railway lines. I assume this is done at night when the trains are not running. If trains run 24h a day it will be harder to carry out maintenance. |

Traveled to Beijing with China Eastern Airlines @JSW: Yes, I know it is not an official web-site. I was just seeing if "the wisdom of crowds" could give me any advice ;) I found that if I tried repeatedly with Skype, sometimes, I could get thru to +86 21 95808 (othertimes it said the number was invalid). I guess it depends how the call got routed any particular time--it is worth calling multiple times. China Eastern are pretty vague about if you need to reconfirm or not. I believe it is safer to reconfirm with China Eastern. When I called to reconfirm, since I had paper tickets, they said that they could only reconfirm if I gave them the ticket numbers -- this is pretty inflexible, I think. With e-tickets, I believe you need to know the passport number or whatever you use as ID with the e-ticket. When I actually reached Heathrow Airport, I found that the flight had been delayed to the next morning (about 12 hours). So China Eastern arranged for us stay in a hotel nearby in Slough. Hotel staff said that it was the first time that China Eastern had had to have people stay, so I guess it is rare for a flight to be delayed that much (perhaps it is the security surrounding the Olympics that caused the delay). The next morning the flight left at 10:30 without incident. On arrival at Pudong airport, I found that customs now X-ray everyone's baggage, whereas previously they seemed to be pretty much asleep and seemed to do almost nothing. We had to queue up for about 10 minutes for this. I guess this is more Olympics-related security, maybe. |

Hard to Use Metro Instead of a Car Why not organize a shuttle bus to the metro station from the community where you live for residents of the community? This would solve the problem for many residents and possibly increase the value of your apartment too. |

Accessibility of Public Transportation @John AFAIK, the taxis in Shanghai are not specifically wheelchair accessible. When I was in Hangzhou with a guy who uses a wheelchair, we moved him in his wheelchair to the taxi door and he slid into the seat of the taxi. Then we folded up his wheelchair and put it in the boot of the taxi (it was a little too large so the lid of the boot had to be held down with a kind of elastic string). Some taxis in Shanghai have an LPG tank in the boot and therefore the boot is pretty small (probably too small for a wheelchair). I think you'd definitely need help from an able-bodied friend travelling with you in order to use taxis. Regarding accessibility of subway stations, I believe each subway station has an elevator for disabled people only which goes down as far as the platform. Subway staff will let disabled people into the elevator. At ground level you need to press a bell next to the elevator door to get the attention of subway staff and it may take a while for someone to respond (since few people use the elevators). I think you would be able to use the subway, especially if you had a Chinese-speaking able-bodied helper with you. I think it would be very difficult for you to use the buses. People would probably have to lift you up the step into the bus, plus buses are often very crowded. Buses don't have any provision for the disabled. |
