Eric is in New York :) I am penguin. I can easy deal with the coldness. However, it's really cold. Yes, I was planning for some place in europe, like greece or spain, in later time (spring or early summer). But I got the NorthWest Airline promotion email in early Janurary. ShanghaiNYC roundtrip is only 4,050 CNY (500 USD plus) before tax and surcharges. So in less then three seconds, I said "ok, i am going to new york". |

PSP is Hard to Use "you have to buy more stuff other than the stone-like black box." This is what we call "eco-system". That is the exact same model as iPod. So many manufactures are making money with iPod accessories. |

Wheat Powder Fuwa (Olympic Mascots) I have never been to http://minimsft.blogspot.com/ until read this article. I strong believe that Microsoft's issue is being over-stated. Microsoft is always in the spotlight and being critisized under an amplying glass. Though I agree Microsoft does have issues. Company always has issues, doesn't it? Google also has issues. Google's honeymoon with the public won't last for too long. See, Rob Enderle wrote "they (Google) were increasingly behaving as if they were the center of the universe", "companies, particularly those that grow very quickly, can lose track of their ethics and, by placing their needs in front of all others, move from being widely admired to widely despised". (http://www.technewsworld.com/alert/47289.html) By the way, Burton Smith (http://www.computerhistory.org/events/lectures/smith_01232001/) joined Microsoft yesterday, who is the mastreo in supercomputing area. I guess he is going to be a Distinguished Engineer. Talking about Distinguished Engineer, well, it's true that Mark Lucovsky, one of the 16 Distinguished Engineer in Microsoft, left MSFT early this year. But if someone has been working a company for 16 years and earned so much money from stock options, it's quite normal for him to change job. Sixteen years! No body can always keep passion to the company for even longer than that, expect he is the founder (but Paul Allen ...) or the CEO/President candidate. Not to mention that Mark Lucovsky's HailStorm is a failure, in both terms of technique and business. Even not to mention Kai-Fu Lee's case. Microsoft has more than hundred Vice Presidents. Every year there are a few MSFT VPs retiring/quitting. Things don't make different, no matter the next stop is Google, IBM, Walmart or a start-up. |

Removed my Email from Blog Plus, bob, go ahead to challenge my "don't be". Do as you like. |
| 22 |
Removed my Email from Blog @bob, We are talking about Jian Shuo Wang's English skill, not mine. Don't be that picky. Don't be that offensive. Don't be that childlike. |
| 21 |
Removed my Email from Blog @bob, if you are native speaker, please be tolerance. Among those haven't been living abroad, Jian Shuo Wang has the best English I have ever seen, both oral, listen and written. Please be patient and nice. if you are not a native english speaker, say for example, you are a Chinese in states or somewhere abroad, please just be nice and respectful. |

Is 10,000RMB/Month a Ridiculous Offer? My thoughts over this topic: http://home.wangjianshuo.com/mvm/000640.htm (in Chinese). |

Is 10,000RMB/Month a Ridiculous Offer? @chinese, I like to seperate the two concepts: expats vs. foreigner. In Aims's case, he is just a foreinger, not expats. Though being a british, he is hired as a local staff. The reason may be that he is just moderate competitive and could be replaced by a local guy, for example, me. That's why the company could not pay him by UK standard, just by PRC standard. That's all about a deal. If the company could find someone to fill the position with 120,000 CNY per year, the company won't pay unnecessary more. Per the same reason, Aims might be able to get a 30,000 pound per year offer in London (equals to 400,000 CNY). But that doesn't mean he deserve 400,000 CNY per year if he is working for China branch of the company. That's the reality about the life. The "Equal labor get equal pay" rule ("同工同酬") only applies for guys within the same country/city, absolutely not for cross boundary situation. |

Jian Shuo on Wired Magazine? WOW! It's fabulous! WIRED is one of the most famous Geeks/IT magazine. I am going to Redmond on first week of April. Definitely I can buy a WIRED apr issue for you from the booksellers in the airport, either Seattle or San Francisco. (I believe they sell). |

No Baggars Premitted on Metro? jianshuo, you have sympathy. But be direct and open, I think beggars are dirty. They cause bad feeling when they approaching me or touching me. I am ok to give them 50 cents or 1 CNY, but I don't like they touching me in so crowded metro (and also other public area likewise). As for newspaper seller, do you mean the the sellers in the train, or the ones on the platform? I think newspaper seller on platform, with a fixed shelf, are acceptable, desirable and demanded. I'd love to buy a mag or newspaper on platform for 10 min reading on the train. |

Things to Prepare for Visiting U.S. "Be sure to call 1860 to open international roaming service first. It is free." :) may be misleading. Someone may think international roaming is free, though actually very expensive, for example, CSL (a hongkong provider) charge 20+ HKD for 1 min when roaming to Shanghai. better to be "Be sure to call 1860 (free-roll) to open international roaming service first." but anyhow, this list is very helpful! |

My Experience of TOEIC Exam i think it's reality that there is no exam can 100% exactly measure a given skillset. likewise, i believe there must be no metrics can 100% exactly measure the quailty of code, document, or personal performance. //shrug anyway, GRE and TOEFL is one of the best english exam in my opinion: fair, acceptable, repeatable. although they are not perfect, but better than nothing. |

Shanghai Hotel Guide To Jane: most white collars in shanghai are finding jobs in the following websites: 1) http://www.51job.com 2) http://www.zhaopin.com/ (AMAIK, Microsoft's business unites in the mainland, including GTEC and MS PRC, posts job descriptions in this website) 3) www.chinahr.com i m afraid headhunters focus more on executives and managers. if you have friends working in shanghai for big companies, such as ibm, general motor, unilever, blah blah, they will bring you information on open positions from time to time. this is an important channel. |

Upcoming TOEIC and MSF Practitioner Exams This page, http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20030807_upcoming_toeic_and_msf_practitioner_exams.htm , is the 12th result in google for "msf practitioner". It's shocking high ranking. Congratulations again. Computers in the Prometric center at Dong Hua Universtiry are simply old. The monitors are 14 inch ones and keep flashing. Taking one hour exam in front of such a moniotor and a hard keyboard was a bad experience. |

Shanghai Hand-Made Map Lu Pu bridge has been put into use. It should no longer be marked as "under construction". More, there are 2 channel crossing the Huang Pu river: 1) Da Pu Qiao channel. Near to the Lu Pu bridge 2) Yan An Road channel. Near to the Oriental Pearl Tower. |
