14 Security Messures in Radio and TV Station

At the US radio station I used to work for, guests had to sign a register in the lobby and then we had to escort them upstairs, but they did not need to show any ID. We had an unarmed guard in the lobby. Staff need to use a security card to get in and out. I never heard of anyone trying to get in to do some kind of sabotage or take over the station, but we did have people who would come in pretending to be couriers, etc. who stole purses or equipment, so that's when they put in the security.

We have the seven-second delay on radio stations too, but only when listener phone calls or other live events with a crowd are being broadcast. It is assumed that broadcasters or invited guests would not say one of the bad words (although every once in a while they do!). Of course, what constitutes a bad word might be different in the US and China. We have seven, which the comedian George Carlin did a famous monologue about. They are all words considered to be obscene, though you will hear every one of them every day on the street in almost any American city.

13 Yifan has his Second Haircut

I can really see Yifan's resemblance to you, Jian Shuo! Of course, I'm sure he looks like Wendy too but since I haven't met her, I don't see it.

12 Yifan's New Year Photo

He is cute, and as you say -- not an infant any more, but a very distinct personality! Happy New Year to all of you!

11 Name of the Baby

Jian Shuo, I got very busy and didn't visit your site for a couple of weeks, so just found out the great news. Congratulations to you and Wendy! I know you will be wonderful parents. The baby looks very happy and very wise. Especially in that first picture, it seems that he knows a secret of the universe that we grownups have forgotten. I hope he'll grow up to help create a better China and a better world. No need to rush on the name, my parents didn't name me until I was five months old!

10 Why Fudan University Only Accept Cash

Esquire is an old and well-respected men's magazine in the States, not hyper-trendy, more directed to older men than young guys. It's something that women might read as well -- it might have a few pictures of pretty actresses but it isn't one of those semi-porn kind of men's magazines. At least I don't think it is now; I haven't read it in a long time, but it was a favorite magazine of my former boss, and we once surprised him on his birthday by making a fake issue with him on the cover -- back in the days before Photoshop and scanners so that we had to physically cut and paste pictures of him into it! So anyway, it's a good magazine to be in, Jian Shuo.

9 The Last Day of Vacation

Jian Shuo, I think that was probably me who told you that I've read that cars last longer if they have a name. Their owners will take better care of them if they think of them more as beloved pets instead of mechanical objects -- and of course, that's just what you were doing, taking good care of Goudaner, when he was hurt. But it's good that the FIAT people are taking care of it without your having to make a big fuss.
Speaking of pets, I don't think you've mentioned anything about the cats in your garden for a while. Are they still there?

7 Craigslist's Success

Just in the last few months on craigslist I found a new apartment, a cleaning service, a lawnmower, a couple of pieces of furniture, and a place to accept donations of things I didn't need when I moved.

Some other good things about craigslist: it doesn't require much in the way of technical skill from users; it's easy to post; it's easy to use. This means that a very wide range of people can offer goods and services on it, such as landlords who only have one or two units to rent, and an equally wide range of people can shop for things on it.

The site isn't jazzed up with a lot of animation, frames, ads, and other fancy stuff, which means that it loads quickly and displays well even on old computers with outdated browsers (like the one I use at home).

Because each user posts the information directly, instead of going through some central point, information is posted (and can be deleted) very quickly. If a landlord posts an apartment, they can take the information off craigslist as soon as they find a tenant. With other rental services (some of which have gone out of business as a result of craigslist) listings would sometimes be up for two or three weeks after the apartment was rented, either because the staff was too busy or because it looked better to prospective subscribers to have more listings available than there really were.

4 FIAT Siena 1.5 HL Pictures

Congratulations from San Francisco! It's a very nice-looking car and I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Are you going to give the car a name? I don't know whether there is enough of a car-owning culture yet in China to have developed the custom of pet names for cars. I think I've read that about 25% of Americans have named their cars and supposedly, cars that have names last longer and are more reliable, although presumably this is because the sort of people who name their cars usually take good care of them, rather than by magic. The most popular name is "Betsy" or "Bessie" and the speculation is that this was a common name for a cow back at the time when people first started owning cars, and the habit transferred over. Of course, this was when cars did not go much faster than a cow. You probably want to have a snappier and more elegant name for this little beauty.

3 March 20 Taiwan Election
