32 Gas Price and Plastic Bags

In france the petroleum is around 13-15rmb a litter.
As a result french people tend to buy car with a low consumption of petroleum, the lower consumption in europe i think.

Please keep increasing the price of petroleum, it will push people to save gas, and it will help protecting our planet.

Now china subsidies the petroleum. this do not push to save gas, and it use lot of government money.
Better use the gov money in Education. To enable poor to go to school and university and build schools that are not the only building to collapse when a earthquake strike.

I see that you did not writte any key word in your post.
Trying to avoid the greeaat firee waall of China that do not like people to speak about history?

Whatever the student asked, they were pacific. There is no justification and no democratic contry send tanks and kill students protesting. it is a simple fact, thus the blame is ONLY on the gov side.

25 Xiang Yang Market is Closed on June 30

underneath the Science and Technology Museum, in the subway, you will find many of the same vendors we used to deal with at the old market. Even though their overhead costs are higher (think temperature control and real bathrooms), the deals are as good as before. take the subway line 2 to the Museum, go up and the stairs and you'll be right at the market. Opens at 10:00 AM.

21 Car Numbers Explode in Shanghai

BTW Jian Shuo, if you all do start sellin' fine Chinese autos in the US of A, make sure to advertise 'em at the big custom Import Shows they have mainly out on the West Coast, California especially. I'm a Filipino and like my fellow Pinoys, we're all about buying up auto parts and doing cool upgrades to auto imports from Asian countries. So far, you know, it's Subarus and Toyotas and also those fine Kias comin' out of Korea, but we're all lookin' forward to China's smooth machines comin' on the market. They got the Hot Import Nights show tourin' the country including East Coast, we'd be psyched to see Chinese cars on display.

Like I was saying in the other thread, bro, you Chinese people are like the heroes for us Asians, we're psyched about China becoming wealthy and successful so that a lot of these arrogant Americans who still think Asian people, language and cultures are inferior, they'll finally realize how strong Asian culture has been and is. We're all cheerin' for you to become rich and strong, you're our major inspiration.

20 Car Numbers Explode in Shanghai

That's cool, man. we've been hearin' a lot in the 50 States about cheap but good Chinese cars coming on the market, hey I'll buy one if it's got the fuel-efficiency, good mile-per-gallon thing goin'. When do you all plan on rolling that stuff out?

P.S. Dude, you have some GENIUSES writing on your blog, does everyone here have like 3 PhD's or somethin'? On another thread,

http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20060303_my_favorite_jifeng_book_store.htm

some dude who's like, the world expert on history of scientific languages or something, he posted up like a professional public policy document for the Chinese scientific community and universities, he's liked solved a difficult question on scientific language right in that document, you all need to prinit it out and distribute it!

Everybody here is so smart, while me, i 'sold out' to do finance. Anyways, you all are an inspiration here, keep up all your cool work here, you have my admiration.

19 My Favorite: Jifeng Book Store

Wow. Doc, this is, like, the most brilliant post I think I've ever read in the history of blogging. You should be a national science policy advisor or something!

I used to be on track to becoming a physicist (more money in finance :), we actually did go and read a bunch of the 'classical' papers in physics- every single one of them in German. The big Nobel physicists, Lorentz, Planck, Pauli, Einstein, Heisenberg, Bohr, Born, all of their landmark papers were in German and so we learned German. So me, I always wondered, how did the main scientific language change?

That's interesting history, dude, I like the way you lay out the factors that make a scientific language popular and how the transition was made.

It's wild too, back when i was sweatin' my own studies in physics (it ain't easy, i tell you that much), my professor said to me that Einstein in particular, he was just TERRIBLE at foreign languages, he was so bad that, if Einstein had had to write in English, he would have never gone into science and picked another field. Einstein would have probably become an engineer or somethin', working for a German car company!

My prof said Heisenberg and Born were also terrible at foreign languages, so they too would have just stayed out of science. Even if they *had* gone into science, they'd've had to spend years improving their English skills to write real sweet-sounding English rather than doing science, so they would have never accomplished their brilliant work cuz they would've lost so many years from their science careers.

Fortunately they all felt confident enough to write in their native German, so the physics community got to see their genius at work.

That makes me wonder, how many potential Einsteins, Heisenbergs and Borns do we have in China who could be publishing brilliant work now in their native Chinese, but are instead spending like 9 or 10 years having to become experts in English writing skills to write up papers in English which is such a ridiculously different language than Chinese? And yeah, i wonder too, how many brilliant young scientists is China losing permanently to the West if they're made to feel their native Chinese is useless as an academic language? Brain drain hurts, man.

Now, for a small country like Hungary or Finland, or Azerbaijan or something, where they use a language with less than 20 million worldwide speakers or something, then yeah, it makes sense for them to write their papers in English or German, or French or somethin' else, since not too many people would read their papers otherwise. But China? You all have like 1.3 or 1.4 billion people in your country alone, plus like another 200 million or somethin' Chinese scattered in other places.

Plus, you all have the world's smartest people, i heard China recently won #1 spot in some global math, science and invention competition (Germany was #2, so China beat the world's best!). You all also have some fine productive science labs, that's one reason I'm goin' to China next year! So you all in China, you have the power to write in Chinese and have hundreds of millions of smart people able to read and comment on your work, plus do good science too that changes the world. You all would be makin' a big mistake to slow yourselves up and require to write papers mainly in English-- China, you all have what, a 3,000 year history, smart people, good science, biggest population in the world, strong economy and industry, you all are gonna be the best in the world soon, you just gotta have confidence, write in Chinese and you'll speed your work up. I'm not sayin' just ditch other languages, it's also good to write some papers in French, German or English or Spanish too, but most of your work should be in Chinese. I promise, the rest of us will learn to read and write Chinese if you publish strong work in it!

One more thing, the Doc's so right man, when i was doing my phsyics study, we had a Korean postdoc there, he said the best thing for Koreans would be to be able to write in Chinese. He said he was so frustrated about havin' to write in English cuz he spent like 6 years or so, in US and Australia just learnin' English, how to write it better. He took English for like 10 years in Korea but he said it was useless, he had to spend like 6 more years just learnin' how to write papers. He said if he could write in Korean, he could've tripled the number of papers he wrote, he could've won twice as many grants, started his career earlier, started his family earlier, earned twice as much money. He was sayin' you all, in Korea, everybody would have a national celebration if Chinese became a big scientific language, they all learn the characters and they would gain a whole lot.

So in China, you all already have hundreds of millions more non-Chinese people all gettin' ready to write in Chinese if you create good Chinese journals. My family's Filipino (a shout out to any of my fellow Pinoy homies out there!), we knew Tagalog and some Spanish, but an old buddy of mine from Manila, he says there's lots of Filipinos in the universities who'd like to write in Chinese too, there are so many Filipinos now in China and Taiwan, they know Chinese, plus all the Chinese people in the Philippines. This despite us once bein' a US colony, we still have people leanin' to Chinese. Japan too, man, the younger people in Japan think Chinese culture's cool, plus they learn the characters even if not used the same way-- i went to Yokohama and they used to all learn English, now they're all takin' Chinese classes, and yeah, it's much easier for Japanese to write in Chinese journals too.

So that's all i'm gonna say here for now. But Jian Shuo, your country China man, you all are like the heroes to Asian people everywhere now, you are our representative and the one way that Asian people can again be important in the world and respectable as much as the West. Asian people, we used to be wealthiest and most respected in the world, but people in the US, man they don't know that history at all, they just think West is superior and Asians and Asian languages are all inferior. You in China becomin' strong and productive again, you're leadin' the way, makin' Asia a leader again, just be confident and make Chinese a prestige language, write your important work in it and the rest of us will be cheerin' you on.

18 Slow Internet Connection at Home

Hmm, so you think it's saturation of the lines that's slowing down the Internet access? In the US we have companies that give us, wireless or direct connect, FTTB LAN access that's usually fast but they're national and i guess they have very high capacity on their lines.

Most public places like hotels though, use DSL of some form, it is indeed more reliable w/o as many outages. these days it's also fast.

Actually this raises a question, since I'll probably be going to China sometime next year- do you all have "wireless cities" the way some places in the US are trying to do (tho w/o much success i'll admit)? In other words, places where the whole city, or at least a bunch of city blocks, are all within a wireless access network, so you can just use a laptop or desktop to connect? That would be awesomely convenient, we could connect up anywhere there to send Email, write messages, do work or whatever as long as our computer is enabled for it.

16 Living Cost in Shanghai - Part II

This is replying to Kari.1100USD will equal to 9000rmb which is a decent amount for rental. But websites are not the best of the places to look at.you have to contact with local real estate agents in person there are plenty available.

I guess you are from US or Europe otherwise you would not be worried with living cost with such high salary. 65K USD a year !This is almost a joke for locals & many expats too who get the fraction of this but can live a decent lifestlye here.(I hope you are not kidding)

You can save plenty even after having higher life style than your present living standard.Though your salary will permit taking TAXI everywhere you go you can consider taking the flat near any of the 3 subway lines preferably line 2 or 1.

6 Planning to Travel to Tokyo

I travel to Tokyo frequently on business and try to spend some of my free time there as well to do some sightseeing and just enjoy the place. As most people have already stated it can be a very expensive experience, but there are some cheaper restaurants/japanese izakaya (grills/bars) where you can get a decent meal and drink in a great atmosphere.
Traveling around is easy but again not cheap and Tokyo Metro and JR lines can get you just about anywhere and there are websites for this. YOu can buy a Suica Card for the JR Lines which is more convenient than having to buy a ticket at each station. It can be topped up at Y1000/3000 a time which will get you a few local trips in and around Tokyo. This card does not work for Tokyo Metro but JR lines cover most locations anyway and I normally get by using JR lines primarily.
Cheaper accommodation can be found but the most comfortable I have found at reasonable prices are Tokyu Stay (the rooms are not made up daily though), some even have a small stove and microwave to do your own simple cooking or heating of prepacked meals. They have a washing machine so you can do your own laundry too. Website is http://www.tokyustay.co.jp/ and some of them are very conveniently located and very well priced at less than USD100 which is not bad for Tokyo.

In Tokyo itself, visit Shibuya early evening and take the Hachiko Exit at Shibuya Station, the square there is amazing and there are lots of interesting people, shops and restaurants around there.
Also on Sunday a must is to go down to Harajuku, one station from Shibuya and observe the dress up crowd there - something to behold!! DON"T FORGET your camera. They are usually standing along the bridge as you walk over from the station to the Park, you could spend hours there just staring and photographing something not of this world. The park itself is also beautiful for some fresh air and a good walk and the autumn colours at the moment are fantastic.
If you want to experience Japanese Gay life, a trip down to Shinjuku and close to the station can be an eye opener and some places not for the faint hearted! Many establishments are open only to Asians and do not allow caucasians in.
IF you like to exercise a run around the Imperial Palace which is very centrally located will give you a 5 km circuit and is great to do especially now that the weather is cooler. Even if you do not run the Palace is one of those places that you need to visit anyway if you can.
Try to get out to the countryside especially in Autumn/early winter stay at a traditional ryokan. This is a Japanese style inn, where you sleep on a futon on the floor, eat in communal diners, walk around in your yukata (traditional summer kimono), and try one that has its own onsen (hot springs) something you have to experience in Japan. The cost for a cheap one will be around USD 85 to 100 but meals are included and you can use the onsen as much as you wish, you may have to pay extra if you want any additional massages etc. You can find a good place only an hour or two by train from Tokyo.
Anyway Tokyo and the immediate surroundings are easy to do as long as you have some spare pocket money! Visit http://www.outdoorjapan.com
One of my favourite places to be and I have lived and traveled all over Asia in the last six years.
Enjoy it!
