10 How A Young Couple and a Kid Live in Shanghai

Public school acceptance is based on your 'hukou' (residence) location - however our local primary school still wanted to 'interview' the child.
This involved basically some teachers talking to the child without us being wihtin earshot.

After the interview they brought the child back, and infront of the child said that his Chinese character knowledge was not enough, and his mental arithmetic was not quick enough (I think he used his fingers :-)), and hence they dont recommend that he goes to the school. It would be too tough for him.

Anyway - we didnt want to send our son to a school that had that mentality, so we managed to get him into another nearby public school that didnt interview. When it came to the actual enrollment time, the original 'interview' school was still expecting our child to enroll - I dont believe they can refuse you if you are in the catchment area for the school.

7 Went to Children's Hospital - Refugee Camp

I am always amazed at the amount of medicine that is prescribed here in China... antibiotics even for mild colds.

One of the strangest treatment to me seems to be for people with fever... they go to a hospital and have drip inserted for several hours...
Normally we would just go to a pharmacist, get some paracetamol - if the fever didnt go within 24~48 hours, then we might see a doctor.

5 Shanghai Car Plates IS Investment

Actually I heard that the government might be changing the rules...
With everyone buying out of Shanghai plates, the local government is losing out on the regular monthly road maintenance fee, as well as apparently the tax that the consumer pays on the vehicle purchase.

So supposedly they are going to introduce a 'cheap' local Shanghai plate, which wont allow you to drive on certain roads at certain times... but it is for Shanghai. Price around 10,000 RMB.

Take the rumor with a grain of salt ?? Who knows the reality :-)

4 Future Shanghai Metro and Maglev Map

A subway map that someone sent me a long time ago - shows how the lines relate to the streets...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7440867@N03/430173607/

(hmmm... resolution not that great on download from flickr... )

My question is regarding line 9 - it shows some kind of extension beyond MingShen road towards JinQiao...
But the extension is not on JianShuo's version.

Can anyway tell me when/if line 9 will extend on past MingShen road ??

cheers

3 10 RMB for Genuine DVD

'Real' DVDs in normal shops like Carrefour are reasonably cheap - 20 odd RMB by memory ??
Not sure where the best place with the best collection of non-counterfeit DVDs is - and is it relatively cheap to other countries ?

2 Shanghai Looks Similar to US, But...

Is a case of putting greater value on the benefits for the majority of the people, over the benefits for the individual?
Not good planning - agreed - but could anyone have planned well given the speed and size of change in China?

The people were compensated for moving?

1 The World is Not Created by Genius

Reminds me of the 'lowest unique bid' type of auction - where people pay some low fee for placing a bid, with the lowest unique bidder being the winner.
People trying to second guess people.
