25 Where to Buy Genuine Software in Shanghai?

To Ochris,

I suggest you not buy the Genuine Software for XP Home Edition. Home Edition doens't have the same function as the professional edition. But for personal use, maybe it's Ok for you. Genuine software is only for big companies. For personal use, get a pirated one, cheap and good. Hehehe=)

18 Chinese Stock Market is Crazy

Thanks for your thoughts on the Chinese stock market. I am just getting into it now. Thinking of buying into some B-shares... I agree with a lot of what you are saying - the Chinese economy is going to keep growing for quite some time I think. Share values are increasing steadily. Maybe there will be a dip, but I think in the long term, growth is the key word.

A few questions for you all:

1. When do you think the Chinese will actually merge the A-share and B-share market? There is some speculation about this happening, but are we talking in months, years or what?

2. I go onto the major websites (Bloomberg, Reuters etc etc) for share quotations, but none of them have mainland China stock market quotes - why is this? I use the Chinese stock market websites, but wondered about this..

3. What kind of predictions would you make for the Chinese B-share market in 2007?

Cheers,

Simon

17 Getting U.S. Visa in China

If you are working in an American company, you can also apply for a US visa through the American Chamber of Commerce's Corporate Visa Program. I got my visa pretty quickly, because my company had already been approved by the Consulate (after the 6 months that my U.S. Company had been a member of the Chamber). It seems this way is pretty good, if you work for a US company, because it is faster than going to US consulate by yourself and more chance of getting accepted, because you have the "backing' of your company. I think their site is www.amcham-shanghai.org ..i think Beijing AmCham does it,too and maybe other Chambers for european countries

15 Old Houses in Shanghai - Part III

As there is a post from Space Property in Shanghai here I would like to add a comment about my experience with them. For those who don’t know, Space Properties market themselves as being old house specialists that cater to the needs of foreigners. One of their biggest marketing points is that they are foreigners themselves and that in some way this makes them more trustworthy. I don’t however agree with this – no offence Gareth!

My problem with Space is that the American ‘owner’ of the company, Scott, ripped me off a while back now as a result of dealings that I had with them. I trusted him and his business partner Brent and in fact considered them to be friends. Unfortunately they took advantage of this friendship and ripped me off a considerable amount of money. I have lived in China for over a decade now and it is a shame for me to be able to say that the only people who have ripped me off here were fellow foreigners.

There are plenty of real estate agencies around that target foreigners looking for old houses such as Phoenix Properties (Shanghai Realty), Autumn Leaves etc. By all means contact these guys and see what they have to offer. I would however recommend against dealing with Space Property as from my personal experience with them they are run by a fellow foreigner who is not as honest as we would all hope that our fellow foreigners would be.

7 Seoul Changes Chinese Name

I just heard that Seoul will changed to Shou'er several days ago. And this surprised me. I do't think that Shou'er is better than Seoul. Maybe we are used to using 汉城 for most of the years. I heard that from one of my classmates, and he said that the Korea governmet thought that the "汉" sounds like China, and the name really have nothing with Seoul. In other counties, people call "Seoul", and only in China we call it by Chinese. The changing of the name is only in China.
Actually, in Korean language, "서울"(Seoul) doesn't have the meaning of a name. The meaning of "Seoul" is "capital". From this we can see, that Korea's capital doesn't have a name. They just call it "capital". As we know that there is a river cross the city, so we call the city by the name of the river (汉江), and then they have "汉城". Korean people use the name of a long time and now they wanna changed it. I really don't know what they are thinking about.
Just let it be. I won't change my mind and call it "Shou'er".
