68 "Love China" Blooms on MSN Messenger

Wow, so an entry like this produces the most comments. Like I have always said before its when the Chinese haters have the chance to,that they will lash out (like that Cafferty guy on CNN) But it's expected that with success one will produce enemies. I guess the West does not want to see a rising power.

Scared dogs bark the loudest.

Don't be hypocritical ... free Hawaii (which is oceans away from America), Alaska, the "American" Samoa, stop bombing Vierques Puerto Rico for US military practice!

66 More Discussion on Tibet

This is for all of the band-wagon jumpers and anti-China bashers in general:
If you're going to say "Shame on China" and try to snuff out the Torch in an attempt to boycott the Olympics, don't forget to fight for Hawaii (since its oceans apart from the USA mainland), protest the US military practice bombing of Vieques, Puerto Rico, to give CA back to Mexico and free "American" Samoa and of course to get out of Iraq.

You can address the administration, but don't criticize the people and the athletes they are cheering for. Don't use this as an excuse for China bashing.

My 2 cents:

58 Fight Between Foreigners and Local

@ling,

"However, I still cannot accept how the Japanese (most of them) can blatantly attempt to rewrite history and refuse to apologise."

Where are your facts on how MOST Japanese blatantly attempt to rewrite history? If you're talking about the revised textbooks, a vast majority of schools REFUSED to use them. Is that what you're talking about? Also, no Japanese person who was not involved in the war of aggression (IE, basically all Japanese under the age of 65) owes ANYONE an apology. The disaster wrought upon Asia by the Japanese imperial army was a travesty, yes, but it was in the past. People shouldn't have to apologize for crimes they didn't commit.

46 Shanghai is Coooold

Also, demographics such as age, location, social class is all important.

For example, If I took a survey in Texas about who supports Bush, results may say a good percentage would. Does this accurately reflect what most of America thinks about him?

45 Shanghai is Coooold

A survey may be biased especially if it's a small or certain percentage of the population that is taking it. Internet surveys in particular do not accurately reflect the true results of a whole population. Perhaps most of the unhappy ones took the survey at the time - as well as a small percentage of Chinese? The Chinese that I've met were rather prideful, so does that mean most Chinese are prideful? No, there are many types of people who feel differently so nothing can be generalised.

jqian - I totally agree.

Everyone else -
every nation has its good and bad sides to it. It depends on what kind of person you are. Do you see the glass half empty or half full?

Despite other issues China needs to improve upon, I am happy to see how quickly the country has changed in such a short period of time. Ever since Deng Xiaoping's decision to open China and to develop the economy it's seen a unprecedented transformation which I have give them credit for as well other gradual changes in progress.

This is what I'm proud of.
Posted by Steve at 2006-12-01 08:08:38. More

43 Shanghai is Coooold

jqian - you might not hear Americans say it often in China, but in America, people do often say "I'm proud to be an American" and don't always have to state it verbally. Ever since the 9/11 attacks there are American flags and patriotic messages all over cars and buildings.

I don't see why either should be offensive to say. I guess because pride and ego have the connotation of saying you're better than others. If people let go of their pride and ego just a little and see everyone as equals, this would be a better peaceful world.

Of course it's just human nature to do this.

We just got home from China after a short vacation and were very happy to be able to arrange to travel to the airport for our first leg to Siingapore via the maglev.
The 20 or so seconds at top cruising speed of 431 kms per hour were truly an amazing ride. I would NOT go to India. Why? Cause I just do not wanna poison myself with coke or pepsi containing a large dose of pesticides. Think about it, Coke or pepsi can get the best water resources in India. Even they can not guarantee clean water purely free of pesticides for their products, who else can? Most likely, if I dined out in a restaurant in India, I would have to drink or eat contaminated water through drinks or food. I just feel sad for the local Indians.

34 Shanghai Metro Line #4

yes, everyone has the right to express their opinions. We should learn to ignore comments that are extremely biased. Usually the author just needs to vent or express their anger/disatisfaction. (especially the infamous Bellevue)

When I was in Shanghai I became homesick for a few months but once I got over that phase I was fine. Now I'm back in the USA (supposedly the best country in the world - another biased view) But better in one terms? - maybe its just that we are richer due to the exchange rate, but everything is relative.

Anyway I miss Shanghai. I miss being able to walk on the streets and take the subway (even at night) and still feel safe. You see, every place has its good and bad. America certainly has its problems as well.

33 Fake Market in Shanghai?

I've also thought that the Chinese manufacturers should use the skills they have to create their own brand and therefore most of the profit is pocketed domestically, but actually the truth is that most people in Shanghai do not want to buy a local product. Perhaps the media has given us the impression that foreign is the way to go. Hopefully this will change some day soon.

31 Fudan v.s. Tongji University

David,

From the look of the Shanghai skyline it seems like there would be a lot of job opportunities for civil engineers here. Modern skycrapers and cranes are visible no matter which direction I turn.

Regarding the job search. The only advice I can give is what has worked for me. A few years ago I was getting ready to graduate in electrical engineering and was looking for ways that I could leverage my Chinese language skills as an engineer. From surfing the web it seemed most companies here were looking for people that had 5-10 years of work experience. Instead I decided to look for a global company that I could work for in the U.S. and seek an international assignment within the company. To make a long story short, I found a company like this and started working for them after I graduated. After a year and half of working at corporate I got an assignment to come out and work at our branch in Shanghai. After coming to Shanghai I realized that we were able to recruit a lot of really good local guys for the engineering positions in China. I would recommend you get solid technical and leadership experience in the States that would differentiate yourself from local candidates and then seek opportunities to come to China in a management role. This is how a lot of us come to China.

Good luck,

Steve

24 RMB Finally Goes Strong

yes, its just a political move. A greater appreciation of the RMB wouldn't be favorable to China. Chinese imports to the U.S. for example would be more expensive, so there will be less demand for Chinese goods as a result. American tourists who come to China will realize less value in their money.

The floating exchange rate has been urged by the United States in order to help the deficit and strengthen domestic demand. However Greenspan explained that it wouldn't help very much.

In my opinion, more expensive Chinese imports in the U.S. may cause a very mild rise in the price level in the U.S. if the RMB value shot up. This would just cause a rise in the inflation level of the U.S. economy. Minimum wage would rise, unions will complain ... etc etc.

just my opinion

22 Pudong Starbucks is Nice

In response to Jennifer's comment, I think it may have to do with a difference of culture or perhaps because Starbucks is the new thing there. Here in the liberal area of California, people actually prefer to go to independent cafes to study and socialize rather than the "greedy corporate" Starbucks. It's no surprise to see a petition here to protest the non-stop building of a new Starbucks in certain neighborhoods such as "little Osaka" Town in San Francisco.

I personally don't mind Starbucks too much... they have good drinks and they're convenient.

19 No Baggars Premitted on Metro?

The pan-handlers should be banned in any public transit system. Surely sympathy is a virtue but everyone subject to harassment in public area? No. The well-to-do Shanghai government should shell out some tax payers' money to help those unfortunate souls. In San Francisco, homeless people are registered with the local government and receive a few hundred bucks in cash every month. (To be specific, "cash grants of roughly $400 a month to about 2,600 homeless people", see article http://sfindependent.com/article/index.cfm/i/073103n_cnc)

Could I suggest a topic for your blog? With the crude oil and unleaded gas recording historical high prices day by day, does it change your driving habits? Is the rising gas price related to the slowdown in car demand in China? BTW, I spend $200 a month on gas for daily commute of 50 miles to work. However, a survey in L.A. showed that people won't change their driving habits (using public transit, carpool, etc) unless the gas goes above $5/gallon. Right now, it is between $2.20 and $2.50. I think the price tag at Chinese gas station doesn't change daily whereas it fluctuates daily here just like stock prices. Are you paying any attention to the gas price? Please share your experience.

10 Beijing 2008 Olympic Emblem Unvieled

I am glad that the Beijing Olympic Organising Committee did not pick some cutesy animal or mascot (like a Panda) for the 2008 games. Yes, the Olympic games are suppose to be fun but its also a serious sporting event, not a carnival. At first glance, the logo looks like a simply-drawn running man but a closer look reveals its hidden calligraphy (it sort of looks like the 'jing' or city character written in Chinese). Plus its shape (like a stone) has an ancient quality to it. Overall, a nice logo in my humble opinion.

5 DB_File Error When Installing MovableType

Now I am really confused.

After spending a few days trying to get Berkley DB_file working with MT I gave up and thought - ok, my server I'll just install mysql and use that instead.

Installed mysql, installed the DBI and DBD interfaces. Created a database.

EXACTLY the same problem. mt-check from command line finds mysql and reports is installed.

mt-check from the browser fails. So if I try to run mt-load I get the
Unsupported driver MT::ObjectDriver::DBI::mysql: Can't locate DBI.pm in @INC ...
error

This is so bizzare. Do you think this could be an apache issue?

I have rebooted the server (and client ;-) seems to make no difference. Any clues thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Cheers
Steve

A word of warning to people!

Be very careful using DB_File. They change their file format often, and I am currently getting screwed by that fact.

I am moving my blog from one server to another. The problem is that the old server has DB_File 1.73. The new one has 1.806. The two are incompatible with each other. To make matters worse, I can't find the 1.73 package that I used (it's no longer on ActiveState).

In case you're curious what you're using:

PPM> query DB_File

If you do go the DB_File route, save a copy of the ActiveState MSI and a copy of the DB_File package. Trust me; you don't want to be where I am now.
