42 Salary in Shanghai - Part II

Hi all,

I am a graphic/web designer with 5-6 years working experience. Australian graduate, Chinese proficiency. Was wondering what kind of salary should I be looking at in Shanghai. And what is the common allowance/benefit. Thanks!

41 Hangzhou to Shanghai D Train Schedule

My family is planning to visit Hangzhou and Shanghai but have booked hotel in Hangzhou. Please let me know how and where to take train to Shanghai, cost of a ticket, first train-what time, last train from Shanghai-what time? What are the `must see` places in Hangzhou and Shanghai? Any local tours that we can join? What bus to take from Hangzhou airport to Xiaoshan?

40 Surrounded by Negative News in US

The average Americans spend a lot and save very little (or none at all). Matter of fact, credit card debt is a huge problem in America, not because they have lots of "expenses", but because they spend more than they make/have. Maybe the mentality is that they can always make more so they spend first? Perhaps the recession is finally hitting them and they realize that they might not make enough....

In China, the older generation folks have always learned to save. However, I see similar patterns (like the Americans) among young people, spending all their money and not saving much. Part of the reasons could be the only child syndrome (2 parents/4 grandparents providing for one child). So young people today have lots of spending cash and don't worry as much about saving for the future. If China ever faces an economic downturn, the same problems will arise here.

39 Is 10,000RMB/Month a Ridiculous Offer?

This article was posted in 2005, so a lot of numbers have changed since! Regardless of what the current (and acceptable) salary range it is right now (2008), one thing to consider as foreigners is that the cost of living in Shanghai is different for foreigners than for locals. I wrote an article on my blog listing a few things to consider. Locals tend to think foreigners get paid much higher salaries, which might be true for the most part, but they don't realize how much more foreigners have to pay for basic living expenses.

38 The Chinese Elements - Part II

I really enjoyed watching the Opening Ceremony. I just watched the ceremony AGAIN, in HD quality. The CCTV live version was very poor quality and colleagues shared the NBC HD version with me today.

The video quality of the NBC version was fantastic! It was also interesting to listen to the commentaries by the Americans. I didn't pay much to the CCTV commentaries because I was so focused on watching the performance, but I don't think they explained the symbolic significance of the performance. The NBC version explained the meaning of each performance although they cut out significant portions due to commercial breaks.

37 Register with PSB During Olympics?

The law has always required all foreigners to register within 24 hours of arrival although it wasn't strictly enforced except for those who are applying for longer visas. Then lately (several weeks ago), they required all foreigners who already have visas/permanent resident to register EVERY TIME they leave the country.

Now they are "strictly" enforcing ALL foreigners to register regardless. I wonder how they will enforce that if for example visitors are staying with family or friends.

36 Gas Price and Plastic Bags

I saw in the news about the gas price increase in China and how that will lower the gas price in the U.S. and other countries.

I wonder if taxi fare in Shanghai and other cities will go up soon. I feel bad for the taxi drivers because the starting fare only went up 1 RMB in the 8 years I have lived in Shanghai while living expense went up by 30-40% and housing went up 300-400%!!

33 IKEA Becomes Cheap in China

IKEA Shanzheng just opened last week. We went there to shop for our houseware and so. It had every thing likely their other branch stroes. But the customer services are ghastliness. Especially their outsourcing storehouse & logistics partern. We bought some stuff and turstfully asked them to delivered to our house. They delicated the date but time. We waited for it whole day long but never show up and even one phone call to tell us what was wrong. We called their delivery partner and their answer always pushing around till we got really mad. They just told us the truth was our goods were lose. They said they will try to make up and deliver next day. I trust them again and disppointed again. Next day noon someone called from the warehouse to comfirmed our address again and said they will arrive one hour later. Then the time already passed without and phone call for explanation. They call us around 2pm said they will arrive around 3:30pm. Well, of course we didn't see any pice of our goods arrived. We called again to ask if our goods already arranged out from the warehouse. They just told us they didn't even move our goods to the truck. In the end they told us will be arrived at 5:45pm sharp but never showed up again. They make us wait two days without any motivation to tell their customer what's going on. What a customer services. BTW, IKEA didn't have any complain hotlines and e-mail address shows on their website. I really want suggust IKEA: Choice a right apartern to continue your services and keep your business reputation.

The apartment Jianshuo mentioned may cost RMB 30000 per sqm. And Jianshuo may regret that he did not buy it that time:) In fact, everyboday in Shanghai maybe other cities as well regret that they did not buy an apartment, those bought already regret they did not buy more. Noboday knows why, huge demand? but since it is so expensive, who is buying??

15 Are American Economically Family-Independent

I find interesting your take on American "family" and its financial connection to generations. I am certainly no expert but can hopefully give additional clarification.

First, all Americans have social security numbers and are required by federal law to pay federal (and state in many cases) taxes from wages earned.
Taxes pay for many things, public education being one item. Therefore, as a taxpayer, even though my husband and I choose to send our children to private school ( and pay full private school tution ) we get no money back or discount for not utilizing one of the services we pay for. In the same manner, taxpayers who have no children or no longer have children in public school still pay the same taxes to support a service that they do not use.
My point is that public education is not free to anyone. Free meal programs in schools are paid for in the same manner, through taxes paid by the citizens.

Insurance is also not free. Insurance is paid for either through individual policies or through employers. Most employers deduct money from their employees pay checks to pay for the service. Health insurance is extremely expensive and many American's choose not to have it.

My husband and I care very much about the happiness of our children, part of that extends to their acheivement. I think most American parents hope that their children are as successful or more successful than themselves. We have paid for private school educations and will be paying for college for our childeren, hoping that not only will they find happiness and be able to support themselves, but also that they meet wonderful people, get married and raise a family. Currently, most American families have both the husband and wife as wage earners.

You are correct that many families do not support the elderly, but culturally that seems to be changing. For instance, we have brought my husband's elderly mother to live with us since her husband passed away. Many of our friends are doing the same thing.

I hope I have been helpful with my additional explanation.
