70 Chinese Government is Like a Company

I am not sure if any of you realize, the "princeling" generation, the sons, daughters, and grandkids of the old revolutionaries are controlling the country. They are really smart, they control the basic infrastructure and natural resources of china, like water resources, power, oil/gas. They are far "smarter" than the high-tech or real estate tycoons. Forget about computers if you cannot even turn on the power. forget about agriculture if you cannot get water. It is like a congolmerate on the outside, but an elitist monopoly inside.

69 Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai?

Hi all,

I am Tony Chu from the Netherlands, I had the same problem as you, only I was also looking for a job as well because I want to settle here in Shanghai...

During my search to a language school here in Shanghai I have been to many schools to try out one of their classes to have a good idea about their offer and to compare the schools, because of course I want to get the best for the money I am paying to learn Chinese.

As I have said already I was also looking for a job here, one of the schools which I liked very much : " BBR languages" had really good Chinese courses and as a plus for me, they were also looking for a new employee.. I made a good deal with them and now I am working here and as a extra I get the Chinese courses as well included my salary..

But anyway, for you all, I can really recommend this language institute, not just because I am working here, nice that I found a suitable job of course, but even if I haven't got a job here I would still have chosen for this language institute...

Anyway, please take a look on their website if you are interested or feel free to contact me!

Greetings,

Tony Chu

61 Four Types of Consciousness

hello jianshuo, I'm glad to find your blog. Recently I had an interesting conversation with a mainland student studying in California. He is about early 20s age. We talked about what happened in China in 1989 and he was so emotional about it saying foreigners made up the whole story and that thugs were determined to overthrow the government. It was obvious to me this guy was totally brain-washed. I felt sad because most young people in China are all brainwashed like him. I felt China is hopeless and has no future.
Then I read several of your blog entries and feel China does have a bright future. Hopefully future leaders are smart enough to learn from you.

50 Serious Ill caused by Serious Mistake

SUE the crap out of them!
Huge mistakes like this, for multiple errors and multiple times, only one way to get even. That is to SUE!. su·ing is the only way change to change a big system like hospitals. Simple apologies in this type of egregious mistakes simply will not suffice. The system only changes if you hit them where it hurts. That is in their wallet. If this is in the US that is. Not sure if China allow such lawsuits. Or that China laws may caps the damage awards to make the suing process meaningless. Then this goes back to a society issue. Bottom line, if this happens in the USA, and your friend have all the paper work, reports., exams., ect.. lawyers will be lining up to take her case. Cost of American healthcare is out of control, but at least we don't have to deal with type of negligence to much, and if it does, people will SUE!

44 New Jersey Government Shutdown?

Government shut down? sounds worst then it is. People still are able to go and do their daily routines. Life will go on! Its just example of Democracy at work! In this case it is called "separation of powers". This separation of powers is derived from the Constitution of United States. I think in Chinese is called "Tian Fa", not only applies to federal government but also applies to State and City level government as well. In this case, Governor and Legislative branch of government showing their strong disagreement. Both Sides temporarily comes to an impass. But like many of your visitors of your blog commented., that.. this can't last forever, eventually there will be a compromised reached. Don't forget, that this headlines like government shutdown will bring regular peoples attention to the situation, and there will be more debate and talk on the subject. Which is a good thing by the way.

JS. can you tell me an example in China federal or state level where Executive branch and Legislative branch both disagreed? and they both wanted to "Flex their muscles" or exercise their powers like the government in NJ did? Since your Blog is about exchange of East and West? I don't want to sound biased., but I don't think The peoples's congress or other legislative branches in chinese government can Publicly disagree or criticize with President Hu Jintao?

At least not to this level of disagreement anywayz, Stand in front of CCTV and publicly say it on TV? All I see on CCTV is People clapping after each pause in his speech?

Last point i want to make is, That if you don't have disagreement? Someone to Challenge the Correctness of the policies., How to you
know it is the correct one?

41 One Child Policy - Part II

Democracy or not. Governments never like to admit mistakes they have made. The result is always the same. That is the common people will suffer. ie, Bush Administration invading Iraq.

JS did not mention the pain and suffering of the one child policy enough. Forced abortions were routine. To make sure they don't have to do that again, force sterilization was a regular practice. Pregnant women with their second child use to go into hiding fearing that they would be caught. Fines were very heavy which amount to years of Annual income. The lucky ones that escape forced abortions in the village, no land was given to them to farm on or to grow rice/food with. That means, the newborn do not exist and have to get a little food from each of the family members's plate. That is if you can call them lucky, causing psychological scars that will never heal.

37 Picture in Shanghai

I think that Shanghaise are materialistic. This is definitely true. They discriminate more based on ECONOMIC CLASS than anything else.

But, the phenomenon isn't just in Shanghai, it's spreading everywhere in China, where money is more important than morality, where women throw themselves at foreigners and hating their own kind. That was the impression i got when I visited China in May of this year.

Me and my wife (both ethnic Chinese) dress as what we would do in the US, casually, went shoppin gin Shanghai one day. You should see the type of uppitiness from some of the SERVICE people. We're basically upper-middle class, own our own home, etc. in the US. I guess we just don't wear some stupid business suit when we go on vacation, unlike most mainlanders. Anyway, she heard of some shop that makes good traditional chinese dress on Nanjing road and went into the Peace Hotel for directions. The lady in there was soooo rude -- it's funny, because she's really nice to the white guys and gals there, just not us. She even tried to talk to us in her BROKEN-ASS English in order to impress us, and my wife just reply back in English back to her face.

The store isn't much better, until we spend $100 USD on a single dress. Then you see them FLOCKING toward servicing us - i.e. materialistic.

It's pretty pathetic that Shanghai will assume that just because you're a white guy, you're rich, but when an ethnic overseas Chinese come back, they're automatically assumed to be poor. Here's a hint -- most of teh white guys who teach English in China are POOR ASSES when they get back to the US -- they're only advantange is the cost of living adjustments. And, most of them are extremely conservative and would love to see China fall onto its ass and engage in civil war (they're also proud supporters of Japan).

Patriotism in China? I see none, i just see a bunch of whores thinking foreigners are better than their own. It's the sad truth.

However, unlike the previou poster, i'll say that the Chinese space program is something to be proud of. To be sure, the design of the original space craft was based on an older Soviet design -- however, every space expert agreed that the design was heavily modified and changed and you really cna't say it's just another Russian copy. And most if not all of the major components are manufactured in China. Sure, it's late, but only 3 countries in the world have sent people to the space on their own - and let's not forget that the entire US shuttle fleet is GROUNDED right now. Unlike the US, i don't think China will stop its man-space flight program.

As far as the poor goes -- there have always been a wide gap between rich and poor in China -- the solution isn't economic re-distribution, but to enforce a fair and equitable treatment of the poor in terms of LEGAL and LAW and ORDER, something for which China lacks. And if this isn't addressed soon, all the Shanghaise are gonna suffer big time when the next revolution occurs. If CHina doesn't address it's lack of law and order (it's legal system is about who has politcal power or money, not about justice), there will be another revolution and civil war.

How about 100 millions chinese going oversea to work in 30 years time. The chinese government may not be able to provide enough jobs in china. We still have to face them in our country. However, why not you go vietnam, camobolia, laos or Burma. It is much more interesting than shanghai ( it likes 10 years old Mahhantten). Bye. I am not sure how much is your airfare from pudong to Paris but figure shall be around 250 Euros. As a foreigner, Unless you have special skill you will not likely to get high paid as i believe the shanghainese are consider the most talent in whole of china including beijing. I am not joking as i seem their learning skills and they are fast. In the past. i used to heard that do not waste food as there are lot of starving chinese in china now i am thinking we need to secure our meals on the table as the chinese is very hungry for knowledges. Just go to any bookstores and you can seem them reading. Speedyop, by the way you know how to speak chinese? If not, learn it fast. It is still difficult to find people speaking english in shanghai but i think that will change soon. If you live the chinese way in shanghai, most likely you will not save much in term of euros. Yuan is still 10 is to 1 euro. Unless you do not intend to go back to your home country in the future. Also timing is very important when entering china.

33 Do You Believe in Living Cost Index?

Living in Shanghai is expensive if you compare how much you earn. For example, if you earn 5000 yuans i think it is still not enough in shanghai. It the living cost cannot match the salary it has grown out of proportion. So either the salary going up or the property market going down. I prefer the property market going down. During my stay at shanghai, i read the property ads in the newspaper. I am thinking whether shanghainese earn a lot because the price of property is a bit high for me. In my country, a normal people buy property costing about 1.25 to 5 million yuans. And my friend buy an apartment for 600,000 yuans during 2000 now he is selling at 3 millions 2005. 500 percents increase. That crazy. I love shanghai but i smell trouble. Bye.

28 How to Win Free Cross China Travel?

Yeah.., If she can write an interesting story about her trip and experience then it is worth some donation. I would not mind donating 20 USD or more if she write something interesting to read at the end. Similar to what Dan Washburn wrote about his trips. I enjoy reading his blog and his stories. But, perhaps she can write it from a chinese perspective. I am sure being native chinese she can communicate more with the people she meet then Dan can. Key in the story is the people interactions. The lives that these people live? Their challenges they face. Really analyze the people and places she will meet. Differences of a lifestyle of from the big cities like Shanghai and the life from rual areas. The widening gap between the haves and the have nots. How the changes and growth of china affect these people. How these people intend to keep up from an ever changing society from agricultural society to modern industrial society. What makes these people tick? what are the dreams and aspirations of these people?

J.S.:

Did your wife know that she is watching a prequel? If I am not mistaking, there is total of 6 parts. George Lucas make the latter 3 movies first (20 plus years ago), You have to tell your wife to watch the next part, that is when their children is grown up. ie, (Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia).

21 Ancident Music from Lijiang

Went there in 2004, Enjoy the show very much. I saw a show in an cultural exhange center. The front of the
building looks like a dome. Across the street, there is a statue of Mao. Quite of few people enjoy riding bike around that area.
Brings back fond memories...

20 Bought iPod Mini as Gift for Wendy

Don't know if you guys in China are aware of this, but apple recently lost a class action lawsuit, and are forced to pay owners of IPOD (1G-3G) cash or credit about 25-50 dollars in USD to all owners who wants it. Lawsuit was on behalf of all people in U.S. on the fact that apple mislead people on the battery life of their ipods.

19 Drive to the City of Suzhou

I have been to Hangzhou and Suzhou in 2004. Enjoyed walking around the West Lake area. I definately prefer Hangzhou better because the city seem to be cleaner compared to Suzhou. Reason being less pollution, and commuting around Hangzhou seems more organized and less chaotic. I Know China is a "developing nation" in progress, but I think the government need to define success less in terms of GDP and skyscrapers and more about peoples quality of life. In this case, control the pollution problem that is so apparent in pretty much all major cities in china. It would really suck if you shorten 5-10 years of your life because of the fumes and sut you breathe into your lungs everyday.

18 Taxi in New York City

Since Living in NYC for 20 plus years, taking taxi is relatively expensive. You can pretty much travel anywhere in all 5 boroughs (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island). For measly 2 bucks. What beats that? There is no limitation on the distance you travel, and oh, yeah, Free transfers from Subway Train system to Surface Transit (Bus system). Great Deal! The only gripe I have is that NYC train system is too old, some stations can be cleaner...

15 Salary in Shanghai - Part II

RMB 4000 is a typical pay for an white collar with 5 yrs experience? My cousin in Shanghai just graduated from a 4-yr school got an offer for RMB 4700 a month in market research field. I believe the salary in Shanghai should be much higher than that. If you have a B.A. degree from a descent 4-yr college with 4 yrs working experience, it should be common to make 100k for a year(after average out, its about 8000 RMB a month). Salary is really high in Shanghai for these well-educated and nice polished young kids.

I will come back to Shanghai and wish can successfuly enjoy the work force there. Don't want to be these bad example of Hai Gui. Anyway, Shanghai has a lot potential and it just STARTED to grow. I project to see a lot change and growth in the next 5 yrs.

14 Is the Real Estate Cooling Down? - Part II

Is Real Estate cooling down? It will eventually, but the question is when?

Shanghai's real estate price has been booming in the past few years, make it one of the biggest real estate bubble in the world (70% of the world real estate have some sort of bubble exist). However, we have to look at this issue to two ways.

First, real estate is becoming the key investment vehicle in China. As China does not have a complete financial market, people in China could not have many investment options(such as hedge funds, porforlio management). Moreover, China has a very unstable and not yet healthy stock market. Therefore, real estate investment is become one of the most profitable and "only" investment options for ppl in China. In Shanghai, we can often see situation as it is really hard to buy an apt, however a fair large number of apartment in Shanghai are not lived by anyone(being used as an investment and resell for a higher price). We have to look at the fact, Shanghai is taking Hong Kong's position and becoming the door for foreigner investors in China, more and more ppl move from outside, either other providence in China or foreign countries, to Shanghai. During recent years, as the depreciate of dollar value and possible appreciate of chinese RMB, a lot U.S. investors put their money in Shanghai real estate market, wish to make a huge profit once the RMB to Dollar exchange rate goes up, as we call this money "hot money". These are the key factors bring up Chinese Real Estate price, especially Shanghai. The fact is, Chinese government would not appreciate RMB value to U.S. Dollar (you can look at the past history in Japan, what happened when they appreciate japanese yuan value). Later on, all these investor would draw back their "hot money", eventually it will cooling down.

second, the Cheif Economist in Morgan Stanley China Division predicted last year that the real estate bubble in China will only last one more year. The price to income ratio in Shanghai Real Estate in outranges. As i often question myself, will I buy an 1 million dollar apt in NY? Of course not. And in Shanghai, it is virtually impossible to get an apt under one million yuan with a not bad location. For residential purpose, no matter how many ppl move to Shanghai, the supply will be greater than demand and the real estate price will be cooling off. Also, Chinese Banks are afraid the burst of real estate bubble in the near future, create more NPLs issues in the bank and the big four state owned bank has been request the government to control this unstable real estate market. With the recent regulations, use real estate as an investment has been more strict controlled than before. This is also part of Chinese economic soft landing plan.

I would say for the year of 2005, the real estate price in Shanghai will still be booming, however year 2006 will be a turning point year, when China fully regulated by WTO and opened up its financial markets. I would predict in the first quarter of 2006, the real estate price will start to drop in a modest rate.

welcome for comments and question.

10 Real-Time Stream Broadcasting Cookbook

Hello, your article is great. However, I'm having some problems getting this to work correctly. I downloaded the software, installed it, and started broadcasting. My problem is that I cannot connect to it to see it. Not even locally. I've tried using http://myip:8080, http://localhost:8080, http://127.0.0.1:8080, http://my_computer_name:8080 and none of them let me connect to the encoder. I use Zone Alarm firewall and Avast anti-virus but have disabled both of them to test it and it still doesn't let me connect. I'm running Win XP with a Logitech USB cam. I can see the image it's supposed to be broadcasting in the encoder window, just can't connect to it. Have any thoughts on why I can't even connect locally?

Thanks
