8 Why Maps in Shanghai are Upside Down?

One comment about the locals and their sense of direction etc... Being directionally challenged is different than not knowing how to get places. many locals know at their home which direction in East/south/West North, but once on the road trying to get places, many take public transit and may just be better at telling you which bus to take. thats said though, my own mom points randomly to indicate direction all the time. So maybe I am just used to finding my own way. ;)

7 Shanghai not as Safe as Before

Keep in mind that while Shanghai may be experiencing an increase in crime rate due to all the reasons listed above, one thing that you need to keep in mind that the media is much more free (though far from having freedom of the press) to report on these occurances now and thus it may add to the perception of increased violence. You don't think husbands have abusing their wives in decades past? But yet its on the rise according to the media reports. Roberries, thefts? Yes, with the increasing gap between the "haves" and the "have nots", more crime will probably occur, but again, don''t forget the source of the news is much mroe efficient now in bringing information to the public
Cheers.

5 Long Metro Trains on Line #1

Amazing the amount of "instant" improvements that can happen in a place where the government has the final say in getting things done and funds it thru whatever means necessary. No votes on taxes or bonds, no environmnetal studies, and very littel notice that the governmnet will be building a mettro system thru your neighborhood and that you now need to move to a new neighborhood, with some finacial assistance form teh govt of course. This is the price of development. Unfortunately, in developed countries and cities (ie the Bay Area, NY Metropolitan area, etc...) it would never happen because it would affect too many people and the lawsuits would keep progress from happeniong for decades. In the meantime, the developing world will leapfrog in terms of technology usage..

The metro system in Shanghai is quite good though its limited daytime operating schedule is still not quite enough for many who frequent the night scene, but it has enough ridership to keep running and is expanding (from the current 5 lines) to some dozen lines in the next few years. Amazing to watch it develop so rapidly.

4 Living Cost in Shanghai - Medicine
For foreigners who cannot speak Putong Hua are unlikely to received the consultation as mentioned by JS in a public hospital. Some local hospitals has a special department for foreigner. You will get the same treat except the doctors speaks English. For that you're registration fee is RMB500 before you start talking to them :)
Not sure where the amount of 500rmb came from. in Shanghai, the Foreigner care clinic where English language service is provided at HuaShan Hospital, HuaDong Hospital and the XuHui & Chang Ning District Hospitals are all under 200rmb for registration. Of course after that, there are lab fees and speciaist fees that would be added regardless of whether youa re local or expat, BUT the foreigner clinic charges more b/c of teh VIP treatment in terms of not having to wait in many of teh regular lines for these tests and scans etc. When I got hit by a car last year, my I was given priority to get my xrays and ultrasound scans done...skipped right past teh line into a leather sofa waiting room for VIP's.

Total cost of three doctor consultations, scans and xray, and pain meds for the broken rib cost me less that USD$150. 1100rmb for what one xray would have cost me back in the US. Of course I COULD have gone to one of the expat hospitals, but why spend $1100 when ¥1100rmb would suffice.

2 What to Write Today?

Funny how certain topics get picked up by all the bloggers while others get virtually ignored. Many have talked about the taxi driver who talked about the economics of the taxi driving business, or about the rolling stones, or about political struggles of the rural peoples. So what about the transition of people's attitudes and behaviors when the sun comes out like it is now? Or more about the transportation system and how it will impact housing costs? I dunno , I am just babbline...sounds like my typical blog...sigh.

1 Future Plan of Shanghai Metro

in case anyone just wants an updated metromap without the future lines, i found a site with good info at urbanrail dot net. Just go to Asia and Shanghai and a map pops up. Sorry did not leave link as i was afraid it would accidentally get banned by the system for spam.

Its not my site but its is real informative. :)
